05:42 am - 2008: The Year the Music Died

Last year I wrote about my favorite new music of 2007. There will be no such list this year. I completely and suddenly lost touch with new music this year. Some is due to technical factors: my favorite music download service made it harder to download full preview tracks and also to replenish my balance. lala stopped sending me discs. WERS broke streaming to my linux box. There are also social factors: my new responsibilities at work mean less contiguous desk-time for music listening. The iPhone means that I spend less time at the computer when at home. Favorite established bands (Portishead, Sigur Ros) produced vaguely conventional albums. I just can't appreciate many new indie darling acts (Bon Iver, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Morning Jacket) beloved by everyone else, so perhaps I'm getting crusty.

Perhaps "reconnect with music" would be a good New Year's resolution. Pandora show me the way!
